From Hijaa' to Satire

The Audio Documentary is 9 minutes and 12 seconds long. It is discussing the old art of criticism, which is called Hijaa’. It started in the Arabian Peninsula, where Arabs wrote it in poetry to make fun and criticize each other. This form has been in practice since the Pre-Islamic era until now in post-revolution Egypt, but of course with some changes. So, basically my documentary is presenting how hijaa’ transformed from it’s traditional form to the sarcastic show that is presented by the famous Egyptian Bassem Youssef.

Princess and Evil narration

PodCast
Princess and Evil
A children fairy tale that was written by Sophianna Mastrosavvaki 2008

Once upon a time, in a faraway land lived a King and Queen with 7 daughters. They all lived in a huge castle with towers and battlements bigger than any in the world. The towers were 7 and in each one, one of the princesses slept.
But one stormy night Brianna could not get to sleep.  The rain crashed on her window and she could hear the wind roaring in the distance.  So she got up and pulled on her fluffy cream dressing gown and opened her bedroom door.
The whole castle seemed to be sleeping and the spindly stairs that connected the tower with the rest of the castle were swallowed up by darkness.  So she crept back through her room and opened a pink satin coated chest and took out a candle.  She lit it with a match and then descended the stairs and came into a long corridor.  It was cold and dark along here, so Brianna wrapped her dressing gown around her tighter and leaned closer to her candle.
As she walked further along the corridor she became aware of a faint green light in the library.  She became intrigued and walked faster  towards the library door that was wide open.
When she stepped into the library the door slammed shut after her and her candle snuffed out.  Brianna wanted to scream but no noise came out.

The only light now was that green light that was as bright as the sun now that she had entered the library.
And there in the cushy armchair by the fireplace sat a beautiful woman.  She looked about 23 years old but like nobody Brianna had ever seen before.

She had green hair and her skin had a greenish tinge to it.  Even her eyes and clothes where green.  She smiled when Brianna came in and said " I have been waiting many years to see you my child." and held out a hand for Brianna to take.
Brianna took it because she was enchanted by the green glow.  She new neither where nor what it was coming from but it made her think of the most wonderful things. And the woman reminded her of someone she had seen in a dream.  A lovely lady who had helped her be reunited with her sisters after they had been ship-wrecked.  But that was only a dream.

The Interview Transcription

This Interview is about the art of Hijaa' that was used by the Arabs to make fun and insult each other. This art was used for years until it reached Egypt in another form that was  similar to the French way of satire. Ahmad Fouad Negm is one of the famous people who still writes hijaa' poetry. After the Egyptian revolution of the 25th of Jan, this art was practiced by the famous Egyptian Satire presenter Bassem Youssef. Wait for the next interview when I have one of his writers talking about it.

Walking from the PVA to the Vending Machine Part 2

The AUC campus is full of different departments, which are more likely to be connected to each other, but the most isolated department is the PVA. The PVA area is the place where AUC students gather and share their artistic interest. While walking in the PVA you will hear people playing the guitar while others are talking. In the morning you will always find Amr standing in the kitchen and making tea to the professors before starting their lectures. When you go downstairs and walk to the Beirut food court, you will find many students standing in a long row to get their orders. While others are sitting, talking, laughing and enjoying the sun in their Assembly hour, there are some students who stand in front the Vending machine grabbing a can of coke.

Journal #1

Title: My Parents' Extreme Tango Makeover
Duration: 9:17
Produced by: Yowei Shaw
Narrated by: Yowei Shaw
You can listen to this documentary if you want.

Brief Description
The documentary revolves around the story of the narrator's parents who showed that there is more to life then daily boring routines. The couple who moved to the US from Taiwan in the 70s, had lead a normal life until they went on a cruise to Latin America where they learnt to Tango, something which changed their lives. The narrator and her sister noticed that the artistic relationship that their parents now shared is more romantic, yet they developed a different type of fighting which revolved around Tango rather than everyday issues. The whole point of the documentary in my view, is that one's life can be brought back to life with something such as dancing Tango.

  • I think that the documentary was not that interesting for the whole 9 minutes, although the audio and the music were really good, I found the story itself not that interesting.
    Audio Quality
  • The audio quality and the nat sound in my opinion were very good; the sound was very clear and the narrator made a good use of the nat sound.
    The Narrator's Voice
  • The narrator's voice was of a good quality. She articulates clearly and her voice sounds that she herself is very interested in what she is saying, in addition to the tango music that was playing in the background sounds attractive.
    Writing Quality
  • The writing was organized and structured; the narrator introduces the points before they are being explained by the interviews sound or the music, so i think it was written in a structured way.
    Length of the Documentary
  • The documentary was 9 minutes and 17 seconds long, which in my opinion makes it a short documentary, but maybe because it was not interesting to me, I found it too long.
    The Story's beginning and end
  • The documentary began normal; it was not very strong. The narrator started with the beginning of her parent's story, which was not very attractive, but at the end it was a little bit emotional and that what made the ending strong.
    The Website
  • The website was very easy to navigate
    Suggestions

I think the narrator should have made the story more attractive than that. She should have included more emotions and visuals for how they dance throughout the whole documentary to keep the listeners alert and interested to hear the story.
